New York Times headline glorifies Wisconsin power grab by Republicans

How could this headline be approved by the New York Times, as the Republican assault against our democracy develops in Wisconsin?

Does the New York Times not recognize this all-out assault against our democracy or is their rush to report “both sides” more important to them? Make no mistake about it, with this headline and the piece that follows, the New York Times glorifies the Republican power grab in Wisconsin, and its architect, State Speaker Robin Vos.

In recent days, Mr. Vos, 50, became the most visible, most fervent spokesman for the package of measures that would limit Mr. Evers’s power and strengthen that of lawmakers. Many of the bills introduced last week were proposed by a committee chaired by Mr. Vos, who is in his seventh term in the Assembly and became speaker in 2013 after serving as chairman of a powerful joint finance committee.

Mr. Vos, a former Racine County supervisor who has owned a popcorn packaging company, has a reputation in Madison as being a bulldog legislator who is effective at keeping party members in line.

Predictably, the headline was changed after backlash.

Imagine, if you will, the legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow glorifying the late Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy. Of course this would have never happened, because Murrow understood the real danger of McCarthyism, and reported on it appropriately and tenaciously.

This is not the time for a “both sides” piece. It’s the time to act like Murrow, and boldly expose this threat to usurp the will of the voters.

Shame on the New York Times for failing again.
