Just a short piece; a little food for thought.
When I was a kid you could turn on the evening news on any major network and get pretty much the same story. You watched the guy who appealed to you the most but the “news” they reported was pretty much the same. Not so today. “News” then was based on verifiable facts so the it didn’t change when you changed the channel.
The first major outlet (or up and coming outlet) that truly embraces the old school news values will become the rock on which we rebuild our trust in the fourth estate. They need to not only be unbiased but they must, repeat: MUST use multiple verified sources for any substantive material so the reporting will withstand challenges from all comers. They should follow the stories without creating them or being lead down the garden path by those that would manipulate the truth.
The point is that ever since news became a profit center for entertainment networks instead of a loss leader the “news” has been tarnished by whatever makes ratings. What we need the most in this Post-Truth climate is to just stick with the truth. No matter where it takes us it will set us free again.
Unlike our president I don’t believe (for the most part) that the major media outlets lie. They have simply lost the integrity that used to bind them together and merit our respect. There are many individuals that still aspire to the highest standards but their parent companies and publishers only see the bottom line without regard for what they see looking back at them in the mirror.
