Friday night, George Clooney accepted an honorary Cesar (French equivalent of the Oscar) in Paris. He used his acceptance speech to talk about “when America was great and news wasn’t fake”, and quoted Edward R. Murrow’s March 1954 takedown of Joseph McCarthy, substituting the words “this president” for “the junior Senator from Wisconsin”. It’s eerie how spot on Murrow’s words are over 60 years on.
No doubt the wingnuts will dismiss this all as another Hollywood elitist and will lambaste him endlessly, but the comparison between Steve Bannon's Trained Orangutan and Tailgunner Joe McCarthy needs to be heard and echoed.
